In libraries, as in life, it’s all about meaning and connection. At Bruce County Public Library, we love connecting you with meaningful stories and great reads.
June's book highlight is Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt: a story about a widow’s unlikely friendship with a giant Pacific octopus.
After the death of her husband, Tova Sullivan begins working the janitorial night shift at the aquarium. Keeping busy helps her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat over 30 years ago. Through her work, Tova becomes acquainted with cranky Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine and, ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. Now he must use every trick his old, invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late.
A story equal parts heartwarming and mysterious, with exceptional and imperfect characters who learn about hope, community, and optimism in spite of darkness.
If you want to read more stories about finding transformative connection after being closed off through times of grief and change, you may enjoy The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett by Annie Lyons or The Lonely Hearts Book Club by Lucy Gilmore.
