Some people spend a lifetime searching for their purpose. For Vickie Cahill, it has always been beautifully simple; help others, embrace every opportunity and never stop learning.
Born and raised in Kincardine, Vickie has always considered this lakeside community home. Although her career took her in many directions, she and her husband happily returned after retiring early. “There was never any question” she says. “We loved our little town”.
Vickie’s career journey is anything but ordinary. From working in a bakery at just 15 years old to managing restaurants, hotels and clothing stores, selling real estate, owning a flower and gift shop and eventually becoming a personal trainer and fitness manager, every role taught her something new. More importantly, each one allowed her to do what she loves most- help people.
She credits her parents with teaching her compassion and a strong work ethic from an early age. Growing up as one of three sisters, she learned to lend a hand whenever it was needed. That philosophy has remained with her throughout life - “if you’re going to do something, do it to the best of your ability” she says.
Even in retirement, Vickie continues to generously share the knowledge and experience she’s gathered over the decades. Whether offering advice, volunteering or supporting local programs, she believes life becomes richer when we lift others up. “As we age, life is challenging,” she reflects - “Why not help someone out if they need it?”
One of the relationships she treasures most began in 2012 when she became a Big sister through Big Brothers, Big Sisters. While she set out to be a mentor, she says the experience changed her also, teaching her patience and the importance of always having fun. The two remain close today.
When she’s not giving back to the community, you’ll likely find Vickie outdoors. She loves walking, spending time in nature, hugging trees- and yes even cows- and never misses an opportunity to spend time with dogs.
Her advice for anyone entering a new season of life is to embrace every experience with an open mind, especially the ones that feel uncertain. After a lifetime of learning, travelling and connecting with people from all walks of life, Vickie believes those experiences teach us the most.
Asked what she hopes people remember about her; her answer is characteristically simple: her compassion, her smile and the kindness she shared along the way.
