Books with buzz always pique my interest as they cross the desk at my library. Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall is one of these, telling a story about the unravelling of a carefully constructed life leading to deadly consequences and difficult choices.

Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

Set in the wilds of the English countryside in the 1960s, it’s a haunting and evocative novel about love and loss.

For more intricately plotted and emotionally intense stories filled with love and secrecy, try The Love of My Life by Rosie Walsh or All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker. You can request these books at the library in print, digital, or audio formats, or visit our website to find them through the library catalogue: http://library.brucecounty.on.ca/
